From weeks to days: Is clinical research truly ready for AI-led EDC setup?
The clinical trial industry has always had a complicated relationship with speed. We want it. We need it. But our processes, built on a foundation of rigorous compliance and risk mitigation, often act as a natural brake.
In our recent webinar, we showcased our AI-led EDC setup, demonstrating how the traditional 8-to-12-week build cycle can be compressed into a fraction of that time. While the technology left many impressed, the real story emerged from the audience polls.
The data suggests we are standing at a crossroads where technology is ready to sprint, but our organizational structures are still finding their footing.
Ambition vs. Adaptability
We asked our attendees two critical questions. Their answers revealed a fascinating tension between the desire for innovation and the reality of organizational change management.
1. What kind of AI automation are you more likely to use for EDC setup?
PDF protocol to EDC: 69%
CRF specifications to EDC: 27%
None of the above: 4%
2. Do you think you can adapt your processes to build a study in 2-3 days with AI?
Yes, but we will need time to adapt: 74%
Yes, it's a simple process change: 26%
No: 0%
The most striking takeaway? 100% of participants believe a 2-3 day study build is possible. The "if" has been replaced by "when." However, the 74% who noted they "need time to adapt" highlights the industry's biggest hurdle: AI is not just a technology update; it’s a role and process transformation.
The perfect equation: Tech + Process + Role
At CRScube, we’ve recently focused on a recurring theme: AI functionality is only as effective as the process surrounding it. Currently, the industry faces massive challenges: rising protocol complexity, increasing amount of data and sources, and the constant pressure to reduce "white space" in development timelines.
While the interest in "PDF Protocol to EDC" is high (at 69%), it represents a significant shift in the clinical trial lifecycle. Moving directly from a narrative PDF to a structured EDC requires a high degree of synergy between various contributors. Without the right framework, this leap can be daunting for even the most tech-forward organizations.
The smart bridge: Why CRF-to-EDC is the "Right Now" solution
While PDF-to-EDC is the exciting future-state we are all working toward, CRScube has strategically positioned CRF Specifications to EDC as the first step in our AI-led development.
This approach offers the benefits of AI acceleration while respecting current professional boundaries and quality checkpoints:
Minimizing role disruption: It allows Data Managers to retain control over the CRF design without having to overhaul the entire protocol development process.
Faster ROI: By automating the build from specifications, sponsors and CROs can realize the acceleration and quality increases of AI immediately.
Quality Assurance: It provides a reliable bridge towards AI automation, providing a smoother transition for teams used to traditional builds.
The path to PDF-to-EDC
We recognize that the ultimate goal is a seamless flow from the protocol to the database. Achieving this level of automation is not merely a technical milestone; it is a collaborative evolution that requires a deeper alignment between technology, processes, and role definitions.
To truly unlock the potential of moving directly from a protocol to a live database, we foresee a shift in how clinical teams operate. Data Managers may need to become more integral to the protocol definition phase, ensuring that study designs are structured in a way that minimizes ambiguity. When the protocol is authored with a "data-first" mindset, the AI can interpret and execute the setup with significantly higher precision.
Furthermore, industry-wide initiatives like the Unified Study Definition Model (USDM) will play an important role in this transition. By championing protocol standardization, it provides a structured foundation necessary to reduce ambiguity for AI engines.
CRScube is committed to being more than just a software vendor; we are a partner in this transition. By focusing on AI tools that enhance existing workflows today, we help you bridge the gap between the 12-week past and the 3-day future.
The technology is here. The question is: is your process ready to keep up?
